"Hills Like White Elephants" is a story in which a couple argues about an operation teh girl is thinking about having. It begins with the couple at a train station in Barcelona. The girl points out that the hills in the distance look like white elephants. An arguement ensues, and the man is trying to convince the girl that the operation is so simple, it is as if it is not really even an operation. He says afterwards that they will be able to have everything but the girl contradicts him. She says they cannot have the world anymore because it will not belong to them, and once they take it away, you will never be able to have it back. She is referring to the child she is carrying, and once she has the procedure, which is an abortion, things will never be the same. The man tries to make her feel better, but she only says she does not feel anything. The man then takes their bags to where the train will be coming, and then asks the girl if she feels any better. She tells him nothing is wrong with her, almost as if the argument had never taken place.
