Olivia Villain's "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" Summary

"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" is a short story dealing with a man's existentialist view on the world. In the story, two waiters at a cafe are having a conversation about an old deaf man taht will sit at the cafe and drink until the early hours of the morning. The younger waiter just wants to go home to his wife, and even comments on how the old man should have killed himself the week before, but the older waiter knows that the clean, well-lighted cafe is a good, safe place, as opposed to a dark, dirty bar or bodega, or even his own home. The older waiter knows that sometimes a person just needs a nice place to be so that he or she does not have to be alone or feel alone.
